Abstract

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have made huge progress in military and civilian missions, ranging from surveillance, reconnaissance, to logistics and transportation. Particularly, to meet requirements of high-demand applications, it is necessary to develop advanced unmanned systems that are capable of autonomously navigating in cluttered indoor and outdoor GPS-denied environments, such as hostile buildings, radiation contaminated areas and forest.

In this talk, we aim to report some recent research activities related to unmanned aerial systems conducted by the UAV Research Group at National University of Singapore. Topics on the development of micro aerial vehicles, unconventional aircraft, multiple UAVs formation will also be highlighted.

About the Speaker

Ben M. Chen received his B.S. in mathematics from Xiamen University, China, 1983, M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Gonzaga University, Spokane, Washington, 1988, and PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Washington State University, Pullman, Washington, 1991. He is currently a Professor and Director of Control, Intelligent Systems & Robotics Area, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National University of Singapore (NUS), and the Head of Control Science Group, NUS Temasek Laboratories. His current research interests are in systems and control, unmanned aerial systems, and financial market modeling.

Prof. Chen is an IEEE Fellow. He is the author/co-author of 10 research monographs including H2 Optimal Control (Prentice Hall, 1995), Robust and H¥ Control (Springer, 2000), Hard Disk Drive Servo Systems (Springer, 1st Edition, 2002; 2nd Edition, 2006), Linear Systems Theory (Birkhäuser, 2004), Unmanned Rotorcraft Systems (Springer, 2011), and Stock Market Modeling and Forecasting (Springer, 2013). He had served on the editorial boards of a number of journals including IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, Systems & Control Letters, and Automatica. He currently serves as an Editor-in-Chief of Unmanned Systems and a Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Control Theory & Technology.
